Final Substation Installed for Canberra's Light Rail

Very early this morning (Tuesday 28 August) the fifth and final substation was installed in Mort Street, Braddon. This is an important milestone, marking another crucial step towards completion of the project. The five substations convert power from the grid to usable traction power for the light rail vehicles.

This substation was lifted off the truck with a 250-ton crane. This careful and delicate exercise was undertaken in the early morning to avoid impacting the road network. Over the coming weeks, power and other services will connect the substation to the light rail corridor on Northbourne Avenue via a tunnel approximately seven metres under the ground.
