The Light Rail project brings opportunity for local employment & local supply chains

Canberra Metro is committed to maximising local participation and employment, with a focus on building local capability in engineering, construction, rail systems, & project management.

During construction of Stage 1 light rail more than 70% of the project workforce came from Canberra and the surrounding region.

More than 130 local businesses were involved, representing more than 40% of the contracts let by Canberra Metro Construction.

The project partnered with UNSW and Australian Defence Force Academy creating work experience and employment opportunities for students of the new civilian civil engineering course and graduates.

The 20 year operations phase is now delivering new skill and employment opportunities for the people of Canberra in drivers and controllers, customer service officers, technical and trades, and safety management.
