Light Rail Stage 2A: Connecting the City to Commonwealth Park
Canberra Metro is proud to be delivering Stage 2A of Canberra’s Light Rail, extending the network from Alinga Street to Commonwealth Park along London Circuit West. This 1.7-kilometre extension will include new stops at Edinburgh Avenue, City South, and Commonwealth Park, improving access to the ANU, nearby homes, and businesses in City West and New Acton.
Stage 2A is designed to enhance connectivity between the city and the lake while supporting active travel with new cycling and walking infrastructure. Landscaping and new trees will enhance the streetscape, urban amenity, and public spaces along the corridor, creating a greener, more enjoyable environment for the community.
Key Features
Powered by renewables
The extension will be powered by 100% green energy. Batteries are being retrofitted to the light rail fleet to enable wire-free travel between Alinga Street and Commonwealth Park.
Frequent and convenient services
Light rail services will run every 5-15 minutes along the extension. Each vehicle has three times the capacity of a standard bus, offering a reliable and efficient transport option.
Accessible for all
Stage 2A stops and vehicles are designed for people of all abilities, supporting wheelchairs, prams, bicycles, and scooters to make commutes easier and more inclusive.
Green track innovation
Sections of the new corridor will feature green track, which reduces urban heat, glare, noise, and dust while absorbing rainwater and blending with the landscape. A Green Track prototype is on display at the National Arboretum Canberra.
