Who is Canberra Metro?

Canberra Metro is contracted by the ACT Government as part of a consortium for the design, construction, operations, maintenance, and financing of Canberra’s light rail system.

Who is part of the consortium engaged for the project alongside Canberra Metro?

The consortium includes Pacific Partnerships, CPB Contractors, John Holland Group, UGL, Mitsubishi Corporation, Aberdeen Infrastructure Investments, DB Engineering & Consulting (formerly Deutsche Bahn International), CAF, and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Ltd (MUFG).

What is a Public-Private Partnership (PPP)?

Canberra’s Light Rail is delivered through a PPP, a long-term agreement between the ACT Government and Canberra Metro to provide public infrastructure. Stage 1 is a 23-year agreement, including 20 years of operations and maintenance, after which the ACT Government assumes ownership of the network.

What are the key project milestones?

  • July 2016: First sod turned.
  • October 2017: First rail laid.
  • December 2017: First Light Rail Vehicle arrived.
  • June 2018: LRV testing commenced.
  • October 2018: Final rail laid.
  • April 2019: Stage 1 operations began.

Stage 2A milestones are ongoing, with construction, stop development, and sustainability initiatives underway.
